Okay, so this hair mask has literally been a life saver (or hair-saver, rather) for me! Not only does it give my thin flat hair loads of bee-yoooooou-tiful volume, but its also helped to banish greasy second and sometimes even third-day hair! To add to that, it stimulates hair growth! What more could a girl ask for, right?!..Oh yes, and it's SUPER cheap to make!
The ingredients for this hair mask are quite easily accessible, and most of you will probably already have them in your home (which is pretty convenient, huh?)
As a guide, you will need the following (the quantities can be modified, see below):
The ingredients for this hair mask are quite easily accessible, and most of you will probably already have them in your home (which is pretty convenient, huh?)
As a guide, you will need the following (the quantities can be modified, see below):
- 2-3 tbsp. dry mustard powder
- 1-2.5 tbsp. sugar
- 3-5 tbsp boiling water (to make the mixture into a paste)
- 1 egg yolk (this can be substituted for a capful of conditioner if you do not have any eggs at home)
- Conditioner (to be used upon application)
The list above is a guide only. If you are trying out this hair mask for the first time, i strongly recommend you use the smallest quantity of each ingredient stated (apart from the water).
Mix all of the ingredients together, in the order that they are listed. Enough water should be added to make the powder and sugar into a paste. Make sure that the mixture is not too watery, as this will end up pouring down your face!
Application:
- Start off by wetting your hair. Try not to make it too wet, as this will mean that the mixture will pour down your face/neck/shoulders. If need be, blot off excess water with a towel.
- Next, apply conditioner to just above the mid-lengths and all the way to the ends. I usually tie my hair in a bun at this point as I find it easier when my hair is out of the way, but you may feel that it's much easier to keep it out - this will not affect the process in any way.
- I then apply the mask into my roots using my fingers (I find brushes to be too tedious to use). I scrape off the excess from the bowl and kind of 'soak' it into the bun to make sure the conditioner doesn't weigh down my hair. This is optional, so it's really a matter of experimenting and personal preference.
- Lastly, I cover my head in cling film or a plastic bag and wrap a towel over my head for extra insulation. Just a warning: some of the mixture is likely to 'leak' out onto the towel, but the stains are easily washed off. The towel can easily be replaced with an old t-shirt or cloth of some sort.
If you are trying this mask for the first time, I suggest keeping it on for 15 minutes minimum and then rinsing it off and washing your hair with shampoo as usual. The more you use the mask, the longer you can keep it on. I gradually built up my time from 15 minutes to 45, but again, this is all a matter of personal preference.
A few things to remember:
This mask is HOT! The mustard takes care of that, and the more sugar you add the 'hotter' it feels! So I would suggest taking it easy the first few times and then gradually building up, in terms of time and quantity of ingredients used. If you use too much it will feel like you have a mini-fire on your head - and that's not a feeling that I would call pleasant.
This mask can be quite drying. However, I have VERY dry ends and I find that applying the conditioner to my ends neither weighs my hair down (because the mask counteracts it) nor lets it get dry. It's a win-win situation, as it just leaves hair soft and bouncy.
Also, this mask smells. I don't really know how to describe that smell to you, but I would say that the mustard can be quite overwhelming!
The mustard combined with the sugar stimulates the blood circulation in your scalp, helping hair to grow faster, whereas the egg yolk conditions and adds shine. This is an extremely easy at home recipe that I am confident will bring you stunning results! I hope you have fun trying this out, and feel free to ask me any questions (along with your experiences with this hair mask) below!
Much love,
Diana x
